Do you want to enter the fascinating world of ant keeping? Then choosing the right species is crucial, especially if you are looking for an ant farm for beginners. Here you will find a selection of species that are particularly suitable for ant keeping for beginners due to their easy keeping conditions, robustness, and exciting behaviors. These species are ideal if you are just starting and are looking for ants for beginners that require little care and still offer fascinating insights into the life of ants. Each species is rated with a small star rating (1–3 stars) – the more stars, the more beginner-friendly!
Lasius niger – The Classic Beginner Ant
Rating: ★☆☆
Lasius niger, also known as the black garden ant, is probably the most well-known native ant species. It is easy to care for, robust, and does not require any special keeping conditions. However, due to its slow development and long founding stage, it requires some patience – perfect for a calm start.
Tetramorium cf. caespitum – The All-Rounder for Beginners
Rating: ★★★
These small, agile ants from Germany grow quickly, are hardly prone to escaping, and do not require additional heating. Their active workers and good visibility in the nest make them an ideal introduction to ant keeping – also suitable for children!
Pheidole pallidula – The Small Two-Caste Society
Rating: ★★☆
This Mediterranean ant offers a great introduction to observing majors (large soldiers) and minor workers. Pheidole pallidula manages with a shortened hibernation and develops quite quickly. A bit more exotic, but still well-suited for beginners.
Camponotus nicobarensis – Exotic Keeping Made Easy
Rating: ★★☆
This tropical Camponotus species is ideal if you want to venture into keeping exotic ants. They are impressively large, nocturnal, and only require moderate heating. Perfect if you want to start an exciting terrarium project!
Messor barbarus – The Fascinating Harvester Ants
Rating: ★★☆
Messor barbarus brings variety to ant keeping! They collect seeds, which they process into so-called "ant bread." Keeping them is uncomplicated, but you should provide them with sufficient space. Ideal for those looking for something special.
Conclusion:
For the easiest possible start, we recommend Tetramorium cf. caespitum if you enjoy observing and want to see quick progress. If you are curious about exotic species, Camponotus nicobarensis is a great choice. And for a classic keeping experience, Lasius niger remains the safest bet.
