Diet & Fungus Symbiosis

Atta texana is a fungus-farming species: workers collect plant parts (leaves, flowers, fruit), shred them, and feed them to the symbiotic fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus. The fungus produces special nutrient bodies that the ants use to feed the queen and brood. Without a healthy fungus, the colony cannot survive.

Recommended food plants: blackberry, raspberry, rose, oak, maple, chestnut, wild grape species, linden, elder;

fruit (apple, pear, grape, banana) sparingly as a supplement.

Never use pesticide- or fungicide-treated plant material!


Feeding

Provide fresh leaf material daily, or regularly (every 3 days) for small colonies.

Sugar water and honey can also be offered as a supplement.

Important: Always provide fresh water (workers use it to moisten the fungus themselves).



Nest Setup - Formicarium Recommendation


The nest setup for Atta texana in a terrarium should always be modular and clearly structured, since the species strictly requires separate areas for the fungus garden, feeding chamber, and waste chamber. Large, sturdy XL-sized formicaria are essential; as the colony grows, additional modules or extra tanks must be connected to meet the increasing space and fungus-volume requirements. Acrylic and glass are especially suitable materials, since both are stable, easy to clean, and highly resistant to moisture.


The fungus chamber uses a slightly moist substrate, e.g. plaster. The feeding chamber can be fitted with the same substrate or kept nearly substrate-free to make adding plant material easier. The waste chamber, on the other hand, should stay dry so that waste dries out faster and mold formation is reduced.

Especially good escape prevention is essential for Atta species, as the workers have powerful mandibles and can chew through soft materials.

Practical Tips & a Quick Checklist Before Buying

  • Make sure you can reliably source fresh, pesticide-free leaf material on an ongoing basis.
  • Plan for an XL formicarium with at least 3 separate chambers
  • Ensure a constant temperature (24–28°C in the fungus chamber) and high humidity in the fungus chamber
  • Ensure good escape prevention, e.g. a thick layer of talcum powder
  • Have a plan for waste removal / an external waste chamber, since Atta produces large amounts of waste
