Solenopsis fugax – Europe's Fascinating Thief Ant

Solenopsis fugax (commonly known as the “thief ant”) is a very small Myrmicinae species found throughout Europe, often occurring in sandy, open habitats, dry grasslands, and under stones. It is known for its cleptobiotic habits (“stealing” nest resources from other species) and its ability to use extremely narrow passages. In captivity, colonies are comparatively easy to keep, but due to their tiny size they require strong escape prevention and careful care.

Behavior – Why Is It Called the Thief Ant?

The name “thief ant” comes from its rare lifestyle: kleptobiosis.

What does that mean?

Solenopsis fugax digs tiny connecting tunnels to the nests of other species (often Lasius or Tetramorium) and:

  • steals brood
  • raids food stores
  • steals protein sources
  • infiltrates the outer chambers of foreign colonies unnoticed

Due to their small body size, they often go unnoticed by the host ants.

Other behavioral traits:

  • not very aggressive toward keepers
  • fast development under optimal conditions
  • strong recruitment during foraging

Kleptobiosis – the Remarkable Theft Behavior

The most important biological peculiarity of Solenopsis fugax is its cleptobiotic lifestyle. It digs tiny connecting tunnels to the nests of other ant species, often to species such as Lasius niger, Lasius flavus, or Tetramorium. These host colonies are not actively attacked; rather, the thief ants exploit their extremely small size and speed to gain unnoticed access to the outer chambers. There, they steal brood, small larvae, or protein sources and disappear back into their own tunnels before the host ants can react.

This behavior is so evolutionarily refined that entire colonies of Solenopsis fugax can sometimes exist right next to other species without ever being perceived as a threat. It is a highly specialized form of foraging that is energetically efficient but requires a colony environment where potential hosts are present. In captivity, this behavior can be observed by allowing them to dig their tunnels into loose substrate – however, never keep them together with actual host species!

Biology & Morphology

At just 1.5 to 3 millimeters long, the workers of Solenopsis fugax are among the smallest ants in Europe. Their body is slender, yellowish to light brown, and specialized for navigating through the finest soil structures. Due to their diminutive size, they fit into cracks, fine soil pores, and narrow crevices, allowing them to gain access almost anywhere – a decisive advantage for their cleptobiotic lifestyle. The queen differs markedly from the workers: at 6 to 8 millimeters long, she appears more massive, with a broader thorax and a larger gaster, reflecting her high reproductive capacity. Males appear mainly during the swarming season and, as is typical for many Myrmicinae, are black and winged.

Character & Suitability for Keepers

What makes this species so special for many keepers is its extraordinary lifestyle, shared by only a few other European ants. Through its kleptobiosis, it offers behavior otherwise only known from documentaries. At the same time, Solenopsis fugax is a robust species that needs little food and grows relatively quickly when conditions are right.

However, due to its tiny size, the species is difficult to observe and presents a real challenge in terms of escape prevention. It is therefore only somewhat suitable for absolute beginners. But anyone who already has experience with small, fast species like Tetramorium or Temnothorax will find in Solenopsis fugax a fascinating and unusual species that even in the terrarium displays natural processes such as raiding and micro-recruitment.
