Lasius fuliginosus is one of the most extraordinary ant species in Europe. Despite its comparatively small body size, it is one of the most ecologically dominant species in our forests. Its jet-black coloration, strikingly glossy appearance, and above all its unique nest-building from so-called carton material make it a biological rarity among native ants.

Distribution & Natural Habitat
Lasius fuliginosus, the jet black ant, is a widespread species of the temperate zone of Europe. Its natural range extends from Western and Central Europe through Southern and Eastern Europe to parts of Western Asia. In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland it is regionally common.
In nature, Lasius fuliginosus mainly inhabits structurally rich, semi-open habitats. Particularly typical are old deciduous and mixed forests, forest edges, parks, traditional orchards, and gardens with plenty of trees. Crucial for its occurrence is the presence of old trees, deadwood, or hollow structures, as these are essential for the species' extraordinary nest-building. Unlike many ground-nesting ant species, Lasius fuliginosus is strongly bound to wood and avoids extremely dry or completely open sites.
External Appearance
Colonies of Lasius fuliginosus are usually strongly polygynous, meaning they have multiple queens. This multi-queen structure allows the species to build very large and long-lived colonies that can extend across large parts of a tree or even across several connected structures.
The queens reach a body length of about 8 to 9 millimeters. They are sturdily built, glossy black in color, and have a noticeably massive thorax compared to other Lasius species. Workers, at about 3.5 to 5 millimeters, are considerably smaller, likewise jet-black and highly glossy. Pronounced polymorphism, as seen in Pheidole or Messor species, is absent, though there are slight size differences within the worker caste.
Males appear only during the reproductive phase. They are more slender, have long wings, and a relatively small head. Outside of the nuptial flight period, they cannot be observed in the colony.
Diet & Trophic Relationships
In nature, Lasius fuliginosus feeds mainly on sugary food sources. The main share consists of honeydew excreted by aphids, scale insects, and other sap-sucking insects. The ants tend these insects intensively, defend them against predators, and sometimes actively transport them to favorable food plants.
In addition, the animals consume animal protein. This includes small insects, carrion, and occasionally captured arthropods. These protein sources are especially important for brood rearing. In captivity, this natural diet can be recreated well by regularly offering sugar or honey water along with small feeder insects.
Social Behavior & Communication
Lasius fuliginosus is a distinctly social and well-organized ant species. Within the colony there is a clear division of labor. Depending on age and need, workers take on tasks such as brood care, nest-building, foraging, or defense.
Communication occurs mainly chemically via pheromones. Alarm and recruitment pheromones are especially well developed, allowing the species to mobilize large groups of workers very quickly. When disturbed, colonies often react aggressively and in a coordinated way, making them effective defenders of their nests in nature.
Also characteristic is their strong territoriality. Colonies often occupy large areas and defend them vigorously against other ant species, especially competing Lasius species.
Colony Founding & Development
The colony founding of Lasius fuliginosus is among the most complex of any European ant. The species is socially parasitic during the founding phase. Young queens do not found colonies independently but instead invade existing colonies of other Lasius species, usually Lasius umbratus colonies. There they kill or displace the host queen and gradually take control of the foreign workers.
Only after this parasitic phase does the queen begin producing her own workers. As the colony grows, the carton nest also grows and can be continuously expanded over many years. Large colonies can contain several hundred thousand individuals and persist for decades.
The Ecological Role of Lasius fuliginosus in Its Natural Habitat
Lasius fuliginosus plays a special key ecological role in Central European forests. As a dominant tree- and forest-dwelling ant, it significantly influences both the insect fauna and the structure of microhabitats. Through its pronounced trophobiosis with aphids and bark lice, it regulates their populations and indirectly affects the health of trees. At the same time, it displaces weaker competing ant species from its immediate surroundings, thereby establishing clear territorial boundaries.
Its influence on deadwood areas is particularly notable. Old tree stumps, dead branches, or hollow trunk sections are preferentially colonized and, through the building of carton nests, stabilized over the long term. These structures in turn create habitats for other invertebrate species, such as mites, beetle larvae, or springtails. Lasius fuliginosus thus functions not only as a predator and forager but also as an indirect habitat engineer within the forest ecosystem.
Nuptial Flight of Lasius fuliginosus
Several environmental factors must coincide to trigger the nuptial flight. Particularly important are warm temperatures, high humidity, and stable weather, often following or during a warm, humid spell. Rain events can play a role but are not strictly required. What matters most is that soil and air are sufficiently moist, as this significantly increases the survival chances of freshly mated young queens.
The reproductives – winged young queens and males – usually leave the nest in the early evening hours. Unlike ground-nesting Lasius species, the flight often originates from tree hollows or bark crevices. The insects only rise into the air briefly, and mating usually takes place close to the nest or in the tree canopy. Large, widely visible swarms are therefore rarely observed.
After mating, the males die within a short time, as is typical for ants. The mated young queens shed their wings but do not immediately search for a suitable nest site on their own. Instead, Lasius fuliginosus follows a specialized and highly evolved founding strategy that functionally complements the nuptial flight.
For keepers, this means Lasius fuliginosus is among the most difficult European ant species to found a colony with. Without an existing host colony or artificial support, successful founding is practically impossible.
From a biological standpoint, the nuptial flight of Lasius fuliginosus impressively demonstrates how closely reproduction, habitat choice, and social behavior can be intertwined. The species is thus a prime example of highly specialized adaptation within the genus Lasius.
