Acromyrmex octospinosus – Description & Care

Acromyrmex octospinosus is a neotropical leafcutter ant of the genus Acromyrmex that collects leaf material to cultivate a symbiotic fungus garden (usually Leucoagaricus gongylophorus). The species occurs mainly in Central America (southern Mexico to Panama) as well as parts of northern South America and is known for its pronounced division of labor, bimodal worker distribution, and distinct forager cycles. Both ecologists and hobbyists study its nest-building, fungus care, and demanding care requirements in captivity intensively.

Distribution & Natural Habitat

Acromyrmex octospinosus is a widespread leafcutter species found in tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America. Its natural habitat includes Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, large parts of the Amazon basin, and numerous Caribbean islands such as Trinidad, Dominica, and Martinique. The species mainly inhabits warm, humid zones with dense vegetation – including rainforests, secondary forests, open forest edges, and agricultural land.

Particularly typical is its adaptation to soils with high organic activity. The nests are usually located in the ground but can also be built under deadwood, between root structures, or under leaf litter. The habitat is characterized by constant warmth, high humidity, and stable, dense vegetation – ideal conditions for collecting leaves and successfully cultivating the symbiotic fungus Leucoagaricus gongylophorus. Since the colonies depend on fresh plant material, Acromyrmex octospinosus is found almost exclusively in areas with year-round vegetation.

Caste Structure & Appearance

The colony of Acromyrmex octospinosus is predominantly polygynous, meaning several queens found the colony together and remain its reproductive foundation. The queen measures about 12–14 millimeters and has a dark brown to blackish-brown coloration. Her sturdy, compact build and pronounced hairiness are typical features of many Acromyrmex species.

The workers are relatively strongly polymorphic, meaning different size castes exist. The smallest workers (minors) reach only 3 mm and mainly care for the fungus garden. Medias, ranging 6–9 mm, form the main caste and handle leaf transport and fungus care. The largest workers (majors) have sturdier heads and serve for defense and cutting up plant material.

Males appear only during the reproductive phase. They are slender, blackish-brown, and noticeably more delicate in build than workers and the queen. The morphological difference between castes is less extreme in Acromyrmex octospinosus than in genus Atta, but still well pronounced.

Diet & Food Requirements

Like all leafcutter ants, Acromyrmex octospinosus lives in close symbiosis with a fungus of the genus Leucoagaricus. This fungus serves as the sole food source for the queen, workers, and brood. The ants themselves do not eat the leaves they collect, but exclusively the nutrient bodies (“gongylidia”) produced by the fungus.

Suitable for feeding in the formicarium are:

  • blackberry and raspberry leaves
  • rose & fruit tree leaves
  • dandelion, clover, privet
  • flower petals (rose, hibiscus)
  • herbs (basil, mint – test carefully)

Important:

All food plants must be pesticide-free, as leafcutters are extremely sensitive to fungicides, insecticides, and other residues.

The fungus garden mainly needs:

  • soft, freshly moistened plant material
  • stable climate and humidity conditions
  • no direct spraying with water

Leaves must be fresh and clean. It's recommended to lightly mist them with water before feeding – but never spray the fungus itself.

Care Conditions & Climate

Keeping this species is demanding, which is why it is classified as care level “3.” The focus is on the stable microclimate of the fungus garden, which must be carefully recreated.

Recommended parameters:

The fungus garden needs a warm, constant environment with high humidity, but should be well ventilated, as standing moisture leads to condensation and fungal damage. Formicaria with active or passive ventilation and separate chambers are therefore well suited.

Since the fungus can collapse from chilling or humidity fluctuations, temperature should be stabilized using heat cable or heat mats, but always indirectly, without overheating the fungus.

Medium humidity is sufficient in the arena – areas that are too wet would decompose the plant material faster and stress the workers.

Nest Shape & Formicarium Design

In nature, Acromyrmex octospinosus builds underground nests with multiple chambers designed for fungus cultivation. Typical features include:

  • main fungus chambers
  • collection and intermediate chambers
  • waste chambers (“garbage caves”)
  • several lateral entrances

The chambers lie flat beneath the soil surface or under root systems. The species builds its fungus in a cloud-like structure of small, loose fragments – significantly less dense than the compact spheres of the genus Atta.

Suitable for keeping in a formicarium are:

  • modular leafcutter formicaria
  • combinations of fungus chamber, feeding chamber, and waste chamber
  • cylinder or box systems that separate multiple areas
  • fungus chambers made of plastic or glass, moisture-stable and mold-resistant

Waste must always be collected separately. A separate waste chamber prevents pathogens from reaching the fungus.

Suitable substrate:

  • humus-rich rainforest substrate for the fungus chamber
  • bare ground or fine sand in the feeding chamber
  • dry, robust ground in the waste chamber

Colony Development & Growth

After the nuptial flight, the young queen founds the colony claustrally. She carries a small piece of fungus (fungal inoculum) in her mouth and places it in the chamber after founding. Using her own fecal secretions, she enables the first growth of the fungus.

The first brood generation includes only a few workers (nanitics), who tend the fungus and bring in leaves. From this point, the colony grows steadily, but noticeably slower than Atta species. Large colonies can nonetheless contain several tens of thousands of individuals.

Development per brood cycle takes 6–8 weeks under good conditions. Once the colony is stable, increasingly polymorphic castes and specialized task distribution emerge.

Special Features & Behavior

Acromyrmex octospinosus shows a pronounced division of labor and is characterized by the following traits:

  • distinctive leaf-cutting behavior
  • structured trails between food plants and nest
  • careful cleaning and shredding of plant material
  • strict tending of the fungus garden
  • active waste separation and hygiene behavior

Typical is the constant “grooming” to keep the fungus surface free of foreign spores. Defensive microflora (e.g. symbiotic bacteria on the exoskeleton) is also maintained – these microorganisms protect the fungus from pathogens.

Unlike Atta, the colonies are smaller but more flexible in their choice of plants. The behavior appears less aggressive but very organized and efficient.

Nuptial Flights & Reproduction

In nature, nuptial flights usually take place at the start of the rainy season, when humidity is high and vegetation is actively growing. In parts of the Caribbean, nuptial flights have been documented in late summer. After mating, the female loses her wings, searches for suitable ground, and builds the founding chamber.

In the formicarium, reproductives are only produced in very large colonies under optimal conditions – usually not before several years.
