Advantages and Disadvantages of Camponotus modoc:

Advantages:
A large, impressive North American carpenter ant with sizeable colonies and an interesting caste system (minor and major workers).

Disadvantages:
Requires a reliable, multi-month winter dormancy – during this time, adequate water must be monitored regularly. As a larger species, it will need a lot of space over time.

Care:
Test tube nest at first, later a deadwood or wood-imitation nest with a temperature and humidity gradient, so that workers and brood can choose their preferred area themselves.

Feeding:
Offer honey or sugar water, as well as feeder insects regularly.

Winter Dormancy:
Requires a classic winter dormancy of at least 3 – 4 months in a cool, frost-free location. Check the water supply regularly during this period.
