Advantages and Disadvantages of the Species Novomessor cockerelli
Advantages:
- Very exciting desert species with striking large workers and majors.
- Interesting foraging behavior – especially with grains and seeds.
- Robust against drought and heat, therefore well suited for warm keeping conditions.
Disadvantages:
- Requires a lot of space and a dry, warm environment.
- Can appear aggressive and is less suitable for absolute beginners.
- Slower growth compared to tropical species.
Keeping
Founding is best achieved in a test tube nest with dry substrate. Later, a large sand-loam nest or an earthen nest with sufficient outworld space should be provided. As the species likes to dig, a deep arena with substrate is recommended.
Feeding
Novomessor cockerelli is a harvester ant.
- Main food: Seeds, grains, nuts (can be stored in the nest).
- Additionally, offer proteins in the form of small insects 2–3 times per week.
