Advantages and Disadvantages of the Species Novomessor cockerelli

Advantages:

  • Very exciting desert species with striking large workers and majors.
  • Interesting foraging behavior – especially with grains and seeds.
  • Robust against drought and heat, therefore well suited for warm keeping conditions.

Disadvantages:

  • Requires a lot of space and a dry, warm environment.
  • Can appear aggressive and is less suitable for absolute beginners.
  • Slower growth compared to tropical species.

Keeping

Founding is best achieved in a test tube nest with dry substrate. Later, a large sand-loam nest or an earthen nest with sufficient outworld space should be provided. As the species likes to dig, a deep arena with substrate is recommended.

Feeding

Novomessor cockerelli is a harvester ant.

  • Main food: Seeds, grains, nuts (can be stored in the nest).
  • Additionally, offer proteins in the form of small insects 2–3 times per week.
