Pheidole militicida

Name: Pheidole militicida
Origin: Southern Arizona, New Mexico, the far west of Texas (USA), and northern Mexico

Pheidole militicida is an impressive seed-harvester species from the desert regions of North America. The species shows a very pronounced caste separation: tiny minor workers collect seeds along established foraging trails, while the strikingly large major workers (soldiers) serve almost exclusively to defend the nest. The species is also active during the winter months and builds its nests as crater mounds with characteristic piles of seed husk chaff.
